Are banks open on bank holidays in the UK?

The short answer: branches close, digital banking does not. The longer answer depends on which payment type you need and which nation you are in.

Reviewed for the 2026 holiday year

Branches close, banking continues

On UK public holidays, high street branches almost always close their doors. That is the visible part. Behind the scenes, the banking system also treats the day as a non-working day, which is why some payments pause even though your card keeps working normally.

What keeps running

  • Mobile apps and internet banking, including balances and standing order setup.
  • Cash machines, Post Office counters where your bank has an arrangement, and cashback.
  • Debit and credit card payments, in store and online.
  • Faster Payments transfers between UK accounts, usually within minutes.
  • 24/7 emergency lines for lost cards and suspected fraud.

What pauses until the next working day

  • Bacs payments, including salaries, most benefits and Direct Debits.
  • CHAPS same-day high-value transfers, which are working-day only.
  • Cheque clearing.
  • Mortgage completions, underwriting decisions and most complaint deadlines.

Nation differences matter

A holiday in one nation does not necessarily stop UK-wide payment processing. Scotland bank holidays such as 2nd January and St Andrew's Day close local branches, and Northern Ireland bank holidays such as St Patrick's Day do the same there, while business elsewhere continues. Compare the calendars on our UK bank holidays 2026 page.

Three habits that avoid bank holiday problems

  1. Check your balance the working day before, especially over the Christmas cluster.
  2. Move any Bacs-dependent payment earlier rather than trusting the day itself.
  3. Use Faster Payments if money genuinely must arrive on the holiday.

Banks on bank holidays: FAQs

Are UK bank branches open on bank holidays?

High street branches are normally closed on bank holidays. A small number of in-store, airport or city-centre branches open with reduced hours, so check your bank's branch finder.

Will my Direct Debit go out on a bank holiday?

No. Direct Debits run on the Bacs cycle, which only operates on working days, so a payment due on a bank holiday is usually collected on the next working day.

Do bank transfers work on bank holidays?

Faster Payments transfers between UK accounts generally work every day, including bank holidays, and usually arrive within minutes. Larger CHAPS transfers are working-day only.

Will I be paid early if payday falls on a bank holiday?

Most employers bring payday forward to the last working day before the bank holiday or weekend, but this depends on your employer's payroll process.

Can I report a lost or stolen card on a bank holiday?

Yes. Emergency lines for lost or stolen cards and suspected fraud operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including bank holidays.
